Gaslighting is a type of psychological manipulation that involves an individual or a group of individuals secretly planting the seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group of individuals. It’s a severe form of emotional abuse that often leads them to question their own memories, thoughts, or events that have happened. If the behaviour is not stopped, it can result in a victim doubting and losing their own sense of identity and self-worth. Gaslighting can also extend to one’s work life. A person who gas lights would be plain torture to work with, especially if they occupy a managerial position. They may verbally abuse their subordinates by distorting the frame of events and hiding the truth. Moreover, a parent who gas lights may be seen smothering their children with affection one second and the next second could be ignoring them and being as cold as ice. The long effects of gaslighting are * Anxiety and depression * Delusion * Isolation * Psychological trauma * Mistrusting yourself When you sense that you’re be influenced by a person and their talk getting a hold of you,the things you need to do are as follows 1) You’re unsure of who you are. You’ve been conditioned to appease and mold into the expectation of what another expected you to be. Take time to reflect, be alone, write, think, be still, meditate, pray. Go back to the things you can remember brought you joy as a child and take small steps to get out there and do the things that make you feel good.
2) You doubt yourself in everything. From struggling with a simple decision like “what do I want to eat tonight” to doubting your own self worth “oh they’re just saying that to be nice, I’m not [anything]”. Someone else controlled your reality to this thinking. Take the time to really feel through and introspect will make things easier over time.
3) You battle with inner negative talk often. You’re not good enough, smart enough, capable enough but when you peel it back, you are these things and more. Give yourself the compassion you give others and you’ll start to see how brainwashed you once were.
4) You’ve got a lot of stuffed emotions. You had to deny and stuff in order to survive but the body never forgets. Feeling through the pain of the past – the anger, the sadness, the rage, the despair, the regret – is critical so you can heal and move on. This often times requires help and I’d suggest somatic or EMDR therapy to get into the body especially if the abuse is compound to the point of trauma.
5) YOU ARE A GIFT TO THIS WORLD. Your empathy, compassion, giving, and love is something an abuser can not understand and will not ever have.

So I’m going to ask something scary: do the words “mental health” make you uncomfortable? They used to make me feel that way, too. But depression and anxiety are just like any other illness. They’re nothing to hide away. In fact, these journeys should be shared and celebrated.Depression is something that shows itself differently for everyone. There is no one person, or one story, or one experience that can make someone universally understand truly how depression alters the lives of those of us who suffer from it. I can’t make anyone understand how it is for everyone, but I can tell you how it alters my life, and maybe that will help people understand how all-encompassing it really is.The ways that depression manifests itself when it breaks through the barriers I one sets with the help of years of therapy and medication. It is a frightening state of mind that seemed to go on indefinitely. The very idea of waking up was riddled with dread. A state of internal turbulence, apprehension and negativity about the future propelled the total collapse of a positive and optimistic attitude.Depression is not particularly tolerated in society, and I realised that those around me were of two persuasions. One group of people wanted to fix me, telling me to pull myself together or recommending professional help. The other group tended to shun me like a leper. It is like a fever that can be scary in the moment but isn’t inherently bad, depression causes a decrease in functional wellbeing, impairing many domains of life, such as work, social relations and sexual life. However, though unpleasant, fever is not the product of biological malfunction. Rather, it is an important infection-fighting mechanism, which made me develope a deeper understanding of the genuine suffering of others. My suggestion is to would be to explore refuge from positivity as a new space to experience life, alternative to running away from life through illusion is to explore an illusion-free space for as long as possible, so as to become more capable of bearing the reality of a disillusioned and concrete life. If successful, you’ll free yourself from your faux-positivity and your chains. At the end,of course, we might not be able to liberate ourselves, either from suffering or from illusions. Life is hell, and it looks as though no heaven awaits us, to top it off, after all, we have nothing to lose.

Traumatic events—such as an accident, assault, military combat or natural disaster—can have lasting effects on a person’s mental health. While many people will have short term responses to life-threatening events, some will develop longer term symptoms that can lead to a diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD symptoms often co-exist with other conditions such as substance use disorders, depression and anxiety. A comprehensive medical evaluation resulting in an individualized treatment plan is optimal.
PTSD affects 3.6% of the U.S. adult population—about 9 million individuals. About 37% of those diagnosed with PTSD are classified as having severe symptoms. Women are significantly more likely to experience PTSD than men.
Symptoms
A diagnosis of PTSD requires a discussion with a trained professional. Symptoms of PTSD generally fall into these broad categories:
Re-experiencing type symptoms, such as recurring, involuntary and intrusive distressing memories, which can include flashbacks of the trauma, bad dreams and intrusive thoughts.
Avoidance, which can include staying away from certain places or objects that are reminders of the traumatic event. A person might actively avoid a place or person that might activate overwhelming symptoms.
Cognitive and mood symptoms, which can include trouble recalling the event, negative thoughts about one’s self. A person may also feel numb, guilty, worried or depressed and have difficulty remembering the traumatic event. Cognitive symptoms can in some instances extend to include out-of-body experiences or feeling that the world is “not real” (derealization).
Arousal symptoms, such as hypervigilance. Examples might include being intensely startled by stimuli that resembles the trauma, trouble sleeping or outbursts of anger.
Young children can also develop PTSD, and the symptoms are different from those of adults. (This recent recognition by the field is a major step forward and research is ongoing.) Young children lack the ability to convey some aspects of their experience. Behavior (e.g. clinging to parents) is often a better clue than words, and developmental achievements in an impacted child might slip back (e.g. reversion to not being toilet trained in a 4-year-old).
It is essential that a child be assessed by a professional who is skilled in the developmental responses to stressful events. A pediatrician or child mental health clinician can be a good start.
Causes
PTSD can occur at any age and is directly associated with exposure to trauma. Adults and children who have PTSD represent a relatively small portion of those who have been exposed to trauma. This difference is not yet well understood but we do know that there are risk factors that can increase a person’s likelihood to develop PTSD. Risk factors can include prior experiences of trauma, and factors that may promote resilience, such as social support. This is also an ongoing area of research.
We do know that for some, our “fight-or-flight” biological instincts, which can be life-saving during a crisis, can leave us with ongoing symptoms. Because the body is busy increasing its heart rate, pumping blood to muscles, preparing the body to fight or flee, all our physical resources and energy are focused on getting out of harm’s way. Therefore, there has been discussion that the posttraumatic stress response may not a disorder per se, but rather a variant of a human response to trauma.
Whether you think of these symptoms as a stress response variant or PTSD, consider them a consequence of our body’s inability to effectively return to “normal” in the months after its extraordinary response to a traumatic event.
Diagnosis
Symptoms of PTSD usually begin within three months after experiencing or being exposed to a traumatic event. Occasionally, symptoms may emerge years afterward. For a diagnosis of PTSD, symptoms must last more than one month. Symptoms of depression, anxiety or substance use often accompany PTSD.
Treatment
Though PTSD cannot be cured, it can be treated and managed in several ways.
Psychotherapy, such as cognitive processing therapy or group therapy
These other illnesses can make it challenging to treat PTSD. For example, medications used to treat OCD or depression may worsen symptoms of PTSD. Successfully treating PTSD almost always improves these related illnesses and successful treatment of depression, anxiety or substance use usually improves PTSD symptoms.
